Conversation with Professor Ilona Kickbusch, political scientist and health policy thinker
In this episode Episode 18 of The Fading Causes Podcast, I pose this question to Ilona Kickbusch, the pre-eminent practitioner and thinker on the topic with a distinguished career spanning many decades.
Our far-ranging conversation goes back to fundamentals of the definition of health and the evolution of the globalhealth movement. How well has it served us, and how did it lose its way? Healthcare is a trillion dollar industry – but how healthy are we as a world?
In what is like a ‘master class’, Ilona touches on all the major concepts that we debate nowadays: health systems and governance, universal health coverage, health inequalities and global solidarity, especially in the aftermath of Covid19, SDGs, international health regulations and laws, health security and securitisation of health. And, of course funding: how much should we really spend on health provision and where does donor aid fit into that?

No one doubts that reform is needed but how difficult is that with the political and institutional interests involved?
