After Commonwealth leaders welcomed the interest shown by the Government of South Sudan in joining the Commonwealth last October in Perth, the ongoing crisis on their doorstep in Sudan will become increasing relevant to the organisation. Affecting an estimated 1.2 million people, conflict in Sudan's southern states is garnering little international attention almost one year after it began. Former head of the UN in Sudan Dr. Mukesh Kapila recently returned to the region, visiting refugee camps and speaking directly to those affected. Using footage shot in the region, Dr. Kapila will discuss the ongoing violence and describe the political machinations that have allowed ethnic violence to continue in Sudan, almost a decade after Darfur. Dr. Mukesh Kapila CBE, an international diplomat with experience in the UN, WHO, IFRC and DFID, is currently Special Representative to genocide prevention NGO The Aegis Trust. As UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan during the original Darfur crisis, he shocked the international community by going directly to the media, bringing a global spotlight to most shocking violence of the twenty-first century.
