  1. Thank you, Mr Kapila, for this thought-provoking article. The tension between ending wars and building peace in conflict-ravaged regions, versus delivering justice for victims of atrocities, is a profoundly important issue.

The recent verdict by the ICC against Ali Kushayab—one of the perpetrators of grave human rights violations in Darfur, Sudan, over two decades ago—is indeed welcome news. Yet it also highlights a troubling contradiction. While the ruling ensures that Kushayab will spend the rest of his life behind bars in Europe, he will nonetheless be treated humanely, with his basic needs met as he grows old. This reflects our collective commitment to human rights, even for those who violated them.

However, this raises difficult questions about the nature of justice. The international community often dedicates significant resources to guarantee that convicted perpetrators live out their remaining years with dignity. Meanwhile, the victims of their crimes—those who endured rape, torture, and genocide—continue to suffer in poverty, trauma, and neglect.

This stark imbalance demands reflection: can we truly call it justice when perpetrators are cared for, while their victims remain abandoned in hardship?

    Thank you,
    Dr. M. Munir A. Safieldin
